Blue Energy is a Japanese manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, established as a joint venture between Honda and GS Yuasa in 2009 to produce batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. The company’s core product is the EH series lithium-ion battery used in Honda’s hybrid cars (such as the Insight, Accord Hybrid, and others). These batteries are designed for high power assist and frequent charge/discharge cycles, featuring a thin prismatic cell format and robust thermal management suitable for automotive environments. Blue Energy operates a production facility in Kyoto that mass-produces these cells under strict quality standards (automotive ISO/TS certification). The technology builds on GS Yuasa’s experience in lithium batteries and is tailored to Honda’s hybrid system requirements for long life and reliability. Blue Energy also engages in R&D for next-generation batteries, including higher energy cells for plug-in hybrids and EVs, leveraging its parent companies’ resources. With a relatively small workforce, Blue Energy is focused on efficiency and quality, having supplied millions of cells to date for Honda’s global hybrid lineup.
